Courses
are offered within the Biology Department in introductory, field, molecular
and cellular biology, microbiology, botany, zoology, environmental and
life sciences, ecology, genetics, evolution, immunology, physiology and
human biology. Also available are courses in the biology of birds and
limnology, as well as biology for prospective elementary school teachers.
For biology majors, a required capstone can be satisfied by taking a department
administered comprehensive examination, or by completing other (approved)
options.
Coming
in the academic year of 2006-7, new courses in biotechnology will be offered
along with the opportunity to pursue a bachelors (BS)
degree in biotechnology.
Students
are also encouraged to apply their knowledge of biology in areas outside
the classroom. Opportunities exist to explore topics beyond the normal
biology curriculum through directed independent study.
The
Biology Department at Indiana University East offers courses supporting
baccalaureate (4 year) degrees in Biology (BS), Biotechnology (BS) and in Natural Science
and Mathematics (BA), with several possible majors, as well as an associate
(2 year) degree with concentrations in chemistry (AS), mathematics (AS),
earth science (AS), biology (AS) or Women and Gender Studies (AA). The
Biology Department also supports the Natural Science and Mathematics Divisions
certificate in Laboratory Science which may be completed alone or in conjunction
with any degree program.
