Microbiology and Immunology
Indiana
University East offers two courses in microbiology, Microbiology and Immunology
(MICR J200), a lecture discussion course and a laboratory course, Microbiology
Laboratory (MICR J201).
One of the faculty research labs in Whitewater Hall
Microbiology
and Immunology (MICR J200) is a course designed primarily for individuals
in nursing and allied health areas. This course includes a review of basic
chemistry and a brief introduction to biochemistry as well as a survey
of the systematics of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic microorganisms,
microbial physiology, genetics, symbiosis including the host parasite
relationship of human pathogenic microorganisms, and an introduction to
immunology. The prerequisite for the course is Biological Concepts (BIOL
L107) or equivalent.
This
course is a lecture-discussion course and is offered in conjunction with
Microbiology Laboratory (MICR J201). The lecture course may be taken without
the laboratory, but the laboratory may not be taken without the lecture.
It is recommended that students enroll in both the lecture and laboratory
simultaneously for the best educational experience.
The
Microbiology Laboratory (MICR J201) is a one credit hour laboratory course
designed to accompany the lecture course (MICR J200). It is recommended
that this laboratory course be taken concurrently with the lecture-discussion
course, however it may also be taken after completion of that course.
The
Microbiology Laboratory course is divided into two primary portions. The
first is an introduction to the microbial world with a survey of both
eukaryotic and prokaryotic microorganisms. While there is not enough time
to examine all of the groups in depth fungi, protozoa, algae, and bacteria will be included. During this portion of the course various laboratory
techniques necessary for examining these organisms will be introduced
and skill in use of these techniques will be developed. This portion of
the course will continue until the time of the midterm examination.
The
second portion of the Microbiology Laboratory course is primarily an exercise
in bacterial identification. Shortly after the midterm examination the
student is given an unknown bacterium. For the last half of the term you
will learn and practice the techniques necessary to identify the unknown.
