Course Information
The
Physics Department offers courses supporting students pursuing degrees
or instruction in professional programs such as biology, medicine, engineering,
dentistry, optometry, chemistry and pharmacy. Students can also take courses
in preparation for degrees in science or mathematics and related employment
in areas such as biotechnology, informatics, natural resources management,
public health, quality control, environmental assessment, urban planning,
and municipal water treatment.

The physics discussion/lab room in Whitewater Hall
The
Physics Department offers courses in introductory and general physics,
as well as in astronomy and physical science for elementary teachers. Current offerings in physics at IUE for Fall of 2008 include General Physics III (P 300) and Modern Physics Laboratory (P 309). The P 300 (3 cr) course may be offered on an independent study basis or as an online (hybrid) course. Physics P 309 (2 cr) Modern Physics Laboratory may be taken concurrently (recommended) with P 300, or separately with P 300, or the equivalent, as prerequsite.
A new course planned for Fall of 2008 is Concepts In Physical Science (P 104), in introducotry laboratory science course for non-science majors interested in gaining some experience in fundamental physics and chemistry laboratory methods. Physics P 104 (3 cr) will also cross-list with Physics Q 202 (3 cr), Physical Science for Elementary School Teachers, but is open to all interested students.
Computer-based, sensor-supported laboratory equipment acquired in 2004 has revolutionized
physics instruction at all levels at Indiana University East. Students
now receive instruction and perform laboratories using the latest instructional
innovations and technologies available for introductory undergraduate
physics education. The physics smart-classroom, located in Whitewater
201, is a combined lecture-laboratory room where both discussion and experimentation
in physics is actively encouraged. Lecture-discussion sessions are
supplemented with frequent demonstrations, both live and virtual, and
laboratories are performed as a coherent sequence of guided activities
paralleling weekly lecture-discussion topics. During lecture-discussion
sessions homework problems are solved in detail and students are encouraged
to ask questions and share knowledge of “real world” physics applications. General Physics courses are also supported online via Oncourse CL.
Students
are also encouraged to apply their increased knowledge of physics in areas
outside the classroom. Opportunities are available for students to independently
and collaboratively explore topics beyond the introductory general physics
"college classroom" experience in laser optics (holography and
photonics), engineering (robotics and materials), atomic spin resonance
(NMR and ESR), biological application (biophysics and biotechnology) and
modern laboratory methods (CAL applications and informatics).
The
Physics Department at Indiana University East offers courses supporting
and supplementing baccalaureate (4 year) degrees in Biology (BS) and in
Natural Science and Mathematics (BA), with several possible majors, as
well as associate (2 year) degrees with concentrations in chemistry (AS),
mathematics (AS), earth science (AS), biology (AS) or Women and Gender
Studies (AA). The Physics Department also supports the Natural Science
and Mathematics Divisions certificate in Laboratory Science which may
be completed alone or in conjunction with any degree program.
