On his first try at college, Paul Summitt wasn’t excited about learning. After moving home, taking some marketing classes at IU East, and talking with his professors, he discovered his passion for business.
Paul helped revive IU East’s Students in Free Enterprise team in 2005. He and his teammates raised funds for Richmond’s Fourth of July fireworks display, and they started producing a television show about local businesses. Paul and two teammates also traveled to India to participate in the annual intercollegiate festival at St. Xavier’s College—an honor typically reserved for Indian students.
Paul has prioritized real-world experience throughout his education. He worked 40 hours a week as the manager of an apartment complex his first year at IU East. Later, he got a paid internship with Belden. And he started two enterprises of his own: a dog collar business and a computer bag business.
“IU East gives students like me the opportunity to increase skills in the field and in the classroom at the same time,” he says. “You can put your skills to use right away—you don’t have to wait four or five years.”
