Tai Walton
Tai Walton is determined. She is resolute on finishing her degree in three years while continuing to work full time and to include friends and family in her life.
As a junior at Northeastern High School, Tai began taking college level courses through Ivy Tech’s Take A Course On Us, a scholarship program for high school students to take courses. Her ability to coordinate classes in high school and college, working 30 hours a week at Joe’s Pizza in Richmond and maintaining her GPA, allowed her to graduate mid-term with academic honors from Northeastern.
Today Tai carries the same busy schedule. She has been promoted at Joe’s Pizza to manager for the IU East location and works full time while continuing her college courses. Tai will start her study at IU East this fall to pursue a degree in education or social and behavioral sciences. Her aspiration is to be a social studies teacher.
“I would like to be able to change kids. A lot of kids today are left on their own to figure things out and they don’t have anyone to help them out,” Tai said. “Teaching can get kids to open up and you can show them how to believe in themselves and accomplish their goals.”
In addition to her class schedule and work load, Tai volunteers her time teaching kindergarten students in JA classes and the Kiwanis Reads.
