PRE-NURSING STUDENTS

Fall 2007 & Spring 2008 skill cluster options

The Nursing Faculty would also like for you to look at the Nursing Handbook.  It's good to have an idea early in your program about the expectations the Faculty will have of you once admitted to the Nursing Program and through graduation.  Just click here - Nursing Handbook - for everything you need to know.

Please be reminded that BSN admission is based on the following categories:

Category. I: Students who have completed more than half of their prerequisite coursework at IUE or students who have completed prerequisite coursework who have a regional connection to IUE will be given first priority for admission.  The following Indiana counties are included in the IU East regional connection:  Fayette, Franklin, Henry, Randolph, Rush, Union, and Wayne.  The Ohio counties included are:  Darke and Preble.

Category. II: Students who have completed more than half of their prerequisite coursework on a campus other than IUE and who are not regionally connected to IUE.

The Pre-Nursing Office has just received news that IU East will transfer the IVY Tech. Microbiology courses as follows:

  • BIO 211 (3) will transfer to IU East as MICR-UN 100 (3) and IU East's Nursing Program will use it toward the Microbiology requirement.  Since it is only three credits, however, and the IU East requirement for Microbiology is 4 credits, students will need to take an additional science or math course to make up the 1 credit hour difference for graduation.
  • BI0 201 (4) will transfer to IU East as MICR-J200 (3) and MICR-J201 (1).  It will, therefore, fulfill the requirement at the same number of credits required by IU East's Nursing Program.

The chemistry requirement for IU BSN Nursing students is as follows:

If a student did not take and successfully complete (with a grade of C or better at the 100 college level or above) at least two semesters of Chemistry in high school, they are required to take it in college.  The minimum course that can be completed is a lecture course of three (3) credits or more.  The lab class is optional.  The Chemistry courses at IU East in Summer and Fall 2006 that qualify include CHEM-N 100 (4), CHEM-C 105 (3) (but note that it has a high school chemistry and a MATH-M 117 prerequisite), and CHEM-C 108 (5).  While it is best to take Chemistry before entering the Nursing Program, students may take it up through the summer session the first year after admitted to the Nursing Program.  There are Nursing courses in the second year of the Program that require Chemistry knowledge.  For questions about your particular situation and requirements, please see the Pre-Nursing Advisor, Bonnie Hestand.
