Letter from the Dean
Welcome to Indiana University East and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, affectionately called HSS! If you want to explore the plains and canyons of Wyoming and Utah; travel to Costa Rica, Thailand, France, or Great Britain; visit an adult corrections facility; experience a session of the Indiana Supreme Court; or see one of Shakespeare’s plays in Stratford, Ontario, then you will want to meet and talk with the faculty and students in HSS.
In HSS, we spend our time exploring what it means to be human. Whether through the arts or the behavioral and social sciences, our common bond is the exploration of the human condition and what makes us tick. Our degree programs are flexible enough to meet many of the needs and expectations of our students, and many areas offer the opportunity to gain first hand experience within the disciplines.
HSS offers you the opportunity to study our past, our behavior, our political and social systems, our values and relationships, and our modes of expression. For those who qualify, students can join the Honor Societies associated with their discipline:
- Criminal Justice – Alpha Phi Sigma
- English – Sigma Tau Delta
- Psychology – Psi Chi
Many students, no matter what their major, explore artistic expression through ceramics, painting, music, sculpture, theatre, and writing. In addition, there are a number of extracurricular activities that are sponsored through HSS for the benefit of the entire region of east-central Indiana and west-central Ohio, including the Whitewater Art Competition, the World Languages Film Series, and the annual Hispanic Heritage Festival. Students also have the opportunity to join a variety of clubs, including the Criminal Justice Club, the History/Political Science Club, the Humanities Club, the Psychology Club, the Sociology Club, the Writers’ Club, and others.
If you have any questions about the courses, majors, or opportunities in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, please do not hesitate to contact me or stop by my office.
