Music Studies at IU East

Welcome to the department of music at Indiana University East. We encourage all students to explore music and welcome students of all levels and abilities, including those who have had little or no prior musical training and experience. There are many options for study including a minor in music and a major in music offered as a concentration area within the BA in Humanities degree.

Each semester our department offers a wide variety of courses, instrumental instruction, vocal instruction, and performing opportunities within unNathaniel Akers and Elliott McKinleyiversity ensembles. Course offerings range from general music appreciation to more detailed courses in music theory, music composition, music history, jazz, rockmusic, and electronic music. Participation in university ensembles is encouraged and includes pep-band, chorus, rock and jam bands, a drum ensemble, a guitar ensemble, and several options to perform in local area orchestras. While most of our ensembles are open to all students of varied musical abilities, a few of the ensembles may require an audition.

We offer music minor and music major programs of study in three primary concentration areas:

Our program in music performance involves a concentrated study of a primary instrument or instruments (including voice) including the techniques and problems involved in live performance. The student will develop his or her craft in performance and cultivate the musical skills needed for performing music of many styles and periods.

Our program in music composition involves the creation of original music with a comprehensive study of compositional technique, music theory, music history, and an analysis of music literature of all types and styles. Further study in electronic music includes the use of computers and other electronic means of music creation.

Our program in music theory involves the scholarly study of music from a structural perspective: the how and why of the actual notes on the page and the sounds that result. And the program in musicology involves the scholarly study of music in terms of historical, social, and ethnographic aspects. Music theorists and musicologists do original research of music of many different styles, genres, and periods and write and publish papers and books on these subjects.
