Indiana University East

Borrowing & Circulation

Library Card

Students are encouraged to use their Indiana University East student ID card as their Library Card. Student ID's are available, at no cost, from the Campus Life Office in Springwood Hall. Once you are issued a student ID, visit the Library to have the card activated as your Library Card.

If you are not a student, or you do not have a student ID, you will need to obtain a Library Card at the Circulation Desk. These are available to area residents with a valid photo ID, or to currently enrolled IU East students. Ivy Tech students can obtain a Library Card with either their photo ID or driver's license.

Both the Student ID and the general Library Card can be used at any I.U. Library for circulation purposes following the guidelines of the specific Library. Please note that you are responsible for all material circulated using your Library Card. If your card is lost or stolen, you should notify the Library's Circulation Desk (765-973-8311) immediately so that borrowing privileges for that card can be blocked.

Loan Periods

Books
Books from the General, Leisure and Juvenile Collections, may be checked out for 6 weeks. There is no limit to the number of books you may have checked out at any one time, but materials are subject to recall.
Magazines & periodicals
Magazines, journals, newspapers, reference books, or indexes are available for in library use. Many bound periodicals may be checked out.
Videotapes, DVDs, CDs, Audiobooks, records, and other media
These generally have a 7 to 14 day checkout period.
Laptop Computers and other equipment
Video cameras, digital cameras, laptop computers and the digital audio recorders circulate for 7 days with no renewals.

Renewals

There are no automatic renewals. You may renew books by bringing them to the Circulation Desk or by calling 765-973-8311. IU East students may renew items online via OneStart. You will be granted another loan period unless a Hold or Recall has been placed on that book. Books from the General Collections and the Juvenile Collection may be renewed 2 times. You can also renew most items that you have checked out from "My Account" in IUCAT.

Fines

A fine of 25 cents per day will be charged for each book that is returned past the due date, which is printed on the white charge slip given to you at the time you check out materials. Reserve materials have a 60 cent per hour fine for late returns. A fine of $1.00 per day is charged for any overdue audio-visual items. Laptops and other equipment are fined at the rate of $50.00 per day.

Material Returns

Material borrowed from the Library may be returned to the Library's Circulation Desk or to any of the campus book drops. One of these is located on the patio on the north side of Whitewater Hall and the second, a drive-up drop box, is located on the Springwood circle drive. There is also an internal drop box located to the left of the Library's main entrance in the Hayes Hall lobby.

Holds

If you need an item that is currently checked out, you can place a “Hold” on it at the Circulation Desk. When the item is returned, a notice will be mailed to you telling you that it is available and can be picked up in the Library. The Library will hold the item for ten days. If you are returning an item that has had a Hold placed on it, you cannot renew that item.

Recalls

Most items can be kept for their normal loan periods. However, material that is needed for Reserves is subject to immediate recall regardless of the length of time a borrower has had it. If an item is recalled, the borrower will have ten days to return the recalled item. Failure to return the item within ten days will result in a $25.00 fine. Borrowing privileges will not be reinstated until the item is returned and the fine is paid.

Lost and Damaged Materials

If you have lost or are returning damaged items, you will need to pay for the cost of replacement, plus a processing fee of $10.50 per item. You will receive a refund for the replacement fee of any lost materials that are later found and returned to the library.

Suspension of Borrowing Privileges

Library borrowing privileges may be suspended if a combination of fines and other fees reach $350.00. Borrowing privileges will be suspended until the fine is reduced to less than this amount. In all of these instances, the IU East Bursar's Office may be notified and students will be blocked from enrolling in classes or obtaining grades or transcripts until the problem is addressed.

Appeal of Fines

Patrons who have been fined and feel that there are extenuating circumstances, or that they have been fined in error, may appeal to have the fines reduced or eliminated. All appeals should be directed in writing to Dr. Mary Ann Morse, Campus Library Interim Director, Indiana University East, 2325 Chester Blvd., Richmond, IN 47374.
