What are Learning Communities?

Learning Community is a group of students who take the same block of classes together. The students in an LC develop close relationships with each other and their professors. The community supports you in developing skills and attitudes that lead to your personal, academic, and professional success.

Advantages of a Learning Community

  • Studying with a friend can be more helpful than studying alone. When you get stuck on a math problem, you have 20 friends who are doing the same problem and can help you out.
  • First year students who take the opportunity to get to know their faculty outside of class compete more effectively for jobs and internships than students who just go to class and never get to know their professors.
  • Field trips and service learning projects build resumes - and character. It's motivating to be around people who share your desire to be successful.
  • Small class size gets you more involved in learning, makes you feel confident enough to ask questions and build personal connections with your professors. Group activities, lunches and field trips add to the fun!
  • Convenience of a two day a week schedule. LC blocks are scheduled for either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday.
  • Guidance for undecided majors. Not sure what you're going to major in? LC's will help you explore your strengths and interests.
