Indiana University East

Criteria for Hiring Adjunct Faculty

For the first time we have had more interested adjunct faculty than we have positions. While this is a rare (and probably temporary) condition, it seems time to formalize the criteria we have been using over the past several years and to elaborate or modify those criteria where appropriate.

This draft working paper is for the School to discuss the topic. The statements listed below are starting places. As we analyze these we may want to add to, delete, modify, or enhance any of these statements.

  1. Seniority with Indiana University East. The total number of sections or the total number of years with us would be appropriate. For individuals with multiple sections we might want to consider the multiple section as a condition for further employment. For example, if one person has taught multiple sections for a long time and another has taught single sections for a long time, who would get priority in a multiple section situation?

  2. Rank as a criterion. Individuals with higher rank would be given preference, other things being equal. For developmental courses (e.g., M007 and M014 rank might not be important, or might be less important). Rank should be based upon subject matter content. (e.g., An individual with an MS in mathematics would rank higher than an individual with an MS in biology for a mathematics position).

  3. Experience with a given course would provide a higher rank. (e.g., Two individuals with equal degrees teaching with us, one in M007 and one in M118 for five years. For a section of M118 the individual with experience in that course would be given preference).

  4. Individuals with BS (not having completed a graduate degree) would only be hired if there were a clear necessity and would only be hired over one with an MS for clearly explained reasons.
