Modifications to the Curriculum
School Curriculum may be modified in three ways:
- Courses or programs may be added to the curriculum
- Existing courses or programs may be modified
- Courses or programs may be deleted from the curriculum.
Procedure
Any course or program to be considered for inclusion, modification or removal from the curriculum of the School must be sponsored by a full - time faculty member of the School.
Addition of Courses or Programs to School Curriculum
New courses may be added to the curriculum of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics as follows:
Course from Master List If the course is being brought forward from the Master Course List a complete course description must be obtained from the university registrar or the originating campus. In addition to a written justification for adding the course, this request must include a complete description of the content of the course, prerequisites, other campuses offering the course, the originating campus and the range of credits that may be awarded. In addition, a complete outline of the course prepared by the faculty member on this campus planning to offer the course must be included.
New Course or Program If the course is being created on this campus, the sponsor must complete Indiana University New Course Request (Form B 82 81020). This form, in addition to a written justification for adding the course, and the requisite materials stipulated in the form, must be completed for each course to be brought forth from the Master Course List. If a new program is being created on this campus, the sponsor must present a complete program description with justification to the School as described below.
Modification of Courses in School Curriculum.
Existing courses may be modified according to Indiana University policy.
Course Change If the course is being modified for use on this campus, the sponsor must complete Indiana University Course Change Request (Form B 82 62030). This form, in addition to a written justification for altering the course for this campus, a complete outline of the course, and the requisite materials stipulated in the form, must be completed for each course to be altered.
Removal of Courses from School Curriculum.
Deletion of a course from campus offerings may be proposed by any sponsor listed above. A complete course description with reasons for removal will be acted upon by the School as described below.
Action:
Proposed modifications to the curriculum must be presented to the School at any regular meeting and acted upon at a later meeting. Final action on a proposal to modify the curriculum must be acted upon within the same academic year in which it is presented. If a proposal to modify the curriculum is not completed within the academic year in which it is initiated, a new proposal may be initiated the next year.
The full - time faculty within the School may make changes in the curriculum with the support of the majority. In the case of a tie vote, the Dean of the School will cast the deciding vote.
Any course change, upon approval by the School, will be submitted to the Indiana University East Curriculum Committee by the NSM Dean for subsequent action. Courses brought forward from the Master Course List will be recorded and the Faculty Senate will be notified that they are being brought to campus by the School. New courses and course modifications will be forwarded as appropriate by the Curriculum Committee.
Systematic Removal of Courses from School Curriculum
Every two years the faculty within the School will review the published curriculum of the School. This review will be initiated by the NSM Dean. Any course not having been taught during the preceding four (4) years will be considered for removal from the list of School offerings. A list of courses to be considered for removal will be presented to the faculty in a regular School faculty meeting. Formal removal of courses from the curriculum will occur at the next regular meeting of the School faculty. Majority support is required for removal of a course from the School offerings.
