Distinguished Student Awards

Awards are determined by the faculty representing the discipline and require the approval of the School chair. Inasmuch as each area has different expectations of students, the criteria for these awards vary. However, there are common minimum criteria. These minimum criteria are:

  • The student must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or greater.
  • The grade point average in the area of the award must be 3.3 or greater.
  • The student must have completed at least 24 semester hours at Indiana University East.
  • The student must have completed at least nine semester hours in the area of the award at Indiana University East.
  • The student must not have previously received a Distinguished Student Award in the same area.

Special Criteria for Chemistry

  • Item #2: Minimum of 3.5 GPA in chemistry.
  • Item #4: Must include C105, C125, C106, C126. A minimum of 10 hours at IU East.

Special Criteria for Mathematics

  • completed M215 and M216.
  • completed at least 3 additional credit hours of math at the 200-level or above.
  • then the decision will be made based on consideration of the following items: overall math GPA: number of credit hours of math at the 200 level or above; and overall GPA.
  • criteria a and b will ensure that the student candidates have completed a basic minimum of upper level math courses. Criteria c will be used to break ties.

Special Criteria for Biology

  • In the area of the award, the GPA is to be 3.3 or greater, and
    • It must include at least 12 hours with a minimum of 3.5 GPA from the following NSM core requirements (26-28 hrs): Organic Chemistry (10), physics (10), and math (6-8).
    • Of the 6 required biology courses (L107, B201, Z201, L201, L315, L314) complete 3, with a minimum of 3.5 GP
  • The student must also meet the following criteria:
    • Both faculty and self nominations are accepted.
    • When two students have satisfied all the criteria both can share the Distinguished Student Award in the same area.
    • If courses in the area of award are completed under two or more IU East instructors, these instructors should communicate and share their insights in order to help with selection.
    • A student may receive this award in more than one area.
