Communication Studies
(Total Hours: 120)
Because student interest is indispensable in developing such skills and abilities, the program permits you to pursue a sequence of studies that will best meet your academic goals.
General Requirements
- You must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours, of which 100 must be in arts and sciences.
- You must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (C) on 4.0 scale. Students who want to take a minor in writing and communica- tions must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5. A course taken to fulfill requirements of the major must be completed with a grade of C or better, and the GPA for all courses in the major must be C (2.0) or better.
- A minimum of 36 credit hours must be in courses at the 300 and 400 levels.
- You must complete a minimum of 24 credits at Indiana University East, and at least 15 credits in the major must be completed at Indiana University East.

- G100 Computer Operation and Word Processing (1) or equivalent, plus two other Computer Literacy courses (2)
- One course in mathematics at the 100 level or higher (3)
- Distribution Requirements (36 cr. hr.)
- Humanities and fine arts (12 credit hours in at least two different disciplines excluding the concentration - no English or studio courses except F100
- Behavioral and social sciences (12 credit hours in at least two different disciplines)
- Natural sciences and mathematics (12 credit hours including one course with a lab)
- Foreign Language Requirements (0-12 cr. hr.)
- Foreign language (0-12 hours - 4 semesters required, through sophomore level.)
- *If you have foreign language training on the high school level or native fluency, you may be exempted from one or more courses through competency testing or successful completion of the second, third, or fourth semester of the foreign language course sequence. If you have been exempted from foreign language courses, you may choose elective courses to meet the credit requirement for your degree.)
- Concentration Requirements
- You must complete a total of 36 credit hours in communication, of which 15 credit hours must be the 300-400 level. Requirements include:

- S303 Propaganda and Persuasion
- W395 Junior Writing Seminar
- S400 Senior Seminar
- S490 Internship in Communication
- Internship
- If you major in communication at IU East, you may complete an internship with an organization in cooperation with the communication faculty.
- Concentration Areas
- You select an area of specialization within your major. An additional 18 credits must be completed from the approved course list, available from the major advisor.
- Corporate Communication, Communication Arts, Editorial Communication
- Electives
- 9 to 24 credits to complete the degree requirement of 120.
