English

General Requirements
You must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours, of which 100 must be in arts and sciences.
You must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (C) on 4.0 scale. A course taken to fulfill requirements of the major must be completed with a grade of C- or better, and the grade point average for all courses in the major must be C (2.0) or better.
A minimum of 36 credits must be in courses at the 300 and 400 levels.
You must complete a minimum of 24 credits at Indiana University East, and at least 15 credits in the major must be completed at Indiana University East.

Distribution Requirements (36 cr. hr.)
Humanities and fine arts (12 credit hours in at least two different disciplines - excluding concentration or studio courses except for F100)
Behavioral and social sciences (12 credit hours in at least two different disciplines) natural sciences and mathematics(12 credit hours, including one course with a lab)
Foreign Language Requirements (0-12 cr. hr.)
Foreign language (0-12 hours - 4 semesters required, through sophomore level. If you have had foreign language training at the high school level or have native fluency, you may be exempted from one or more courses through competency testing or successful completion of the second, third, or fourth semester of the foreign language course sequence. If you have been exempted from foreign language courses, you may choose elective courses to meet the credit requirement for their degree.)

  • Group 2 (3) Backgrounds of American Literature including:
    • L250 American Literature before 1865
    • L251 American Literature since 1865
    • L355 American Fiction to 1900
    • L 356 American Poetry to 1900
  • Group 3 (3) Modern Literature including:
    • L299 English Literature since 1800
    • L332 Romantic Literature
    • L335 Victorian Literature
    • L357 20th Century American Poetry
    • L358 20th Century American Fiction
    • L372 Contemporary American Fiction
  • Group 4 (3) Literature in World and Cultural Context including:
    • C205 Classical Mythology
    • L213 Literary Masterpieces
    • L378 Studies in Women and Literature
    • L379 American Ethnic and Minority Literature

One senior seminar (L450, L460, L470 or L480)
Electives
You may choose 15 elective credit hours of English courses according to your individual goals and interests. You may plan to focus on one literature area (from above) or on a concentration in expository writing, creative writing, or other areas as approved by advisor and chair.
300- and 400- Level Course Requirements:
Of the 36 credit hours required for the English major, 18 must be in courses at the 300 or 400 level.
